The beauty of the Indian mythological stories is enhanced by the zmruta crude collages and brush strokes. Hope to see more such work from Amruta Patil! What an outstanding read it turned out to be! Only the modern framing narrative, set in a fallen time many years after the events the goddess narrates, is rendered in muted charcoal, as patip sign of all that’s lost.

If there is one book that you plan to buy this year, make it Adi Parva. Patil uses the pzrva old Indian tradition of a “sutradhar” to weave her web of stories and connect with the contemporary reader. With her, the childlike innocence of Krita Yug started slowly giving way to the gritter Treta and ‘The thread twirls and brings us to a queen of this land, whose story closely mirrors Shakuntala’s.

Ha, I remember towards the end of this book, there were some typesets in the drawings here and there that honestly looked like printing errors.
