But I was also pleasantly surprised to find a chilling mystery and a villain so believably evil, that my blood boiled while readi Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy Author Tessa Gratton is a member of the illustrious Merry Sisters of Fate writing group which includes Maggie Steifvater and Brenna Yovanoffso before even cracking the cover of her debut BLOOD MAGIC, I expected the writing to be lovely, the romance bittersweet, and the emotional payoff to be huge.
He’s not really something, he’s really boring.
This book also appealed to me because I loved the characters. As impressed as I was with the characterizations, it was the love story that stole my heart. He has a few secrets of his own and is all too familiar with the lure of blood magic.
Jul 31, Lisa Mandina rated it really liked it. From the Hardcover edition. I can’t help but feel that it might have been a little better served if it was in third person rather than being narrated. Ugh, what a mess. This book has one of the worst endings I’ve ever read. It’s almost 1 AM and I feel strangely perky. What follows is a lot of creeptastic events involving a spell book, a creepy lady who possesses people, a lot of crows, and a lot of Gratton teases all senses as she describes the metallic scent of blood, roughness of headstones beneath your hands, the different colors during sunrise and sunset, even going so far as to note that Nicholas notices the ggatton here is much different from Chicago.
So it’s nothing especially special yes I said it!
Yet somehow it feels right to Silla Kennicott. Yeah, let’s all get drunk off of the pink stuff, not. It might have been interesting to see this story go through several more rounds of revisions to edit out some of the more excessive literary swooning, as well as more development in the plot and the characters. But when you follow the god of sacrifice and poetry, everything is a riddle, and nothing is safe. It grew tiresome after a while.
