It was still a good story, but it lost a lot of elizabth with me for that. That they just happen upon the one guy in the universe with that tech, history and skill set is too absurd; the author should have set it up so that they came upon each other in a more believable way.

Unfortunately, the arrival of Stella includes that of Rafe, her former lover, and here the characterization fails a little, at least from my point of view: It also features Kylara Vatta and is set after the events of Vatta’s War. While I still read this book cover to cover more or less in a single sitting, that is definitely much more a reflection of my love for space opera than the quality of the work. Elizabeth Moon is one of my favorite authors.
This isn’t a bad space opera, just a disappointingly average one. And Ky has other problems. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

The first book in this series could have been taken for a stand alone novel – yes there were unanswered questions but overall it felt complete for me anyway. After orchestrating a galaxy-wide failure of the communications network owned and maintained by the powerful ISC corporation, Turek and his marauders strike swiftly and without mercy. I was very happy to see that no shortcuts were taken, and she doesn’t have the SF version of a talking sword to solve all her resource problems.
