The film project, in calling itself Kino-Pravda, seemed to assert a central role for itself. While establishing a new genre, which has become firmly fixed in documentary tradition, Nanook and its creator have been criticized on various grounds. Vertov was sure what the antidote must be. I have used Barnouw’s book sinceand I’m grateful for each updated edition. Specialized, but worth it if you’re interested. He stayed sixteen months. The film digresses to note parallels.
