I loved listening to the audiobook, courtesy Librivox. Even with the unfortunate eugenics mentions, I love this book–it’s comforting and entertaining and never fails to perk up my spirits.

First, her orphans need love and care; then good food and exercise; then be taught how to handle the real world for their futures; next new clothes and finally, a new building system. Open,gregarious,brave,funny,compassionate,and a modern woman. If all of the doctor’s ideas, and a few of my own, get piernaa materialized, our trustees will open their eyes a bit when we show them about. Sallie, the heroine, is a charmer. The Little Colonel’s Christmas Vacation. She also tells of neighbours who start of grumpy then all pull together when crisis strikes.
Some of the anecdotes about the orphans are amusing and others will break your heart. If you can understand and accept the attitudes of the period in which it was written, you might enjoy the story. The romance is better here too, as a they have a relationship of equality and mutual respect and b I adore both parties instead of just one as in Daddy-Long-Legs.
Because, of course, Our Narrator and her eventual Love Interest flirt back and forth, in a very geeky sort of way, over science books.

I found all that very creepy, especially the part where a child too stupid for her own good was thought deserving of a treatment of arsenic for a mere cold Was it Judy or “Dear Enemy”?

I find Sallie a slightly less dense narrator than Judy papaigo of the prequel Papqito Long Legswhose greatest charm and irritation is her cheerful, persistent earnestness. Women’s independence and capability of learning and managing and doing are never in question. A little bothersome sometimes Sally would go on and on about Gordon, and I so detest him but an overall enjoyable read. Reading it recently, I was struck by how feminist and subversive for the time period it can be–all caveats aside, of course. I’ve read this book many times since my grandmother gave it to me years ago although sadly, not the original copy–I had to buy a used copy of the reprint, and all page numbers are from that edition.
After his wish is granted, the Littlest Angel learns to live happily in heaven, but is his gift for the Christ child the right one?
This was a cute story. I could just imagine his accent, and seeing as how the Scottish accent is my second favorite in the whole world, well, it’s not surprising that I liked him as well as I did. Her letters record her adventures with the kids some of whom are a real handful ; the loss of a series of cooks; convincing sexist trustees she is more than capable, and looking at her personal life without rose-coloured glasses.
I did feel that I missed some stuff in not having any pictures in my edition.

She also has quite a temper, a characteristic that she shares with her “Enemy”! Continue shopping Checkout Continue shopping. This is a very funny, beautiful and heart-warming story with powerful concepts and will always remain in my favorites shelf. Refresh and try again. They mean self-discipline and thought for others, and my children have got to learn them. This book has all sorts of dodgy stuff in that can be overlooked a bit – but not completely!
